World Famous
SANTA ANA
NATIONAL
WILDLIFE REFUGE
Considered the jewel of the U.S. National Wildlife Refuge system Santa Ana’s 2,088 acres has some 400 species of birds, half the butterfly
species found in North America, and rarities such as the indigo snake and the endangered ocelot.
During the winter a passenger tram runs from the visitor’s center through the refuge three times daily, giving visitors an understanding of the
refuge history, plant life and wildlife. There are excellent walking trails designed to take the visitor through a cross section of the refuge and also to
a hide overlooking a Resaca that is popular with waterfowl.
Maps, bird lists, books and advice are available at the visitor’s center where some interesting displays may be seen. Santa Ana is one of the most
famous refuges in North America and it attracts over 160,000 visitors a year.
There are no services at Santa Ana and visitors use lodging and restaurants in Alamo (the closest) and in surrounding towns such as McAllen,
Pharr, San Juan, Donna, and Weslaco.
