The 15 square mile Santa Ana land grant was awarded by Mexico to Benigno Leal in 1834 who established ranch headquarters and a cemetery
at the site. This ranch became part of the Alamo Tract which was later developed by the Alamo Land & Sugar Company.
The southern part of the ranch, including the cemetery, remained undeveloped and was acquired in 1943 by the U.S. government to form Santa
Ana National Wildlife Refuge.
Pictured here is a group of bird watchers quietly canoeing the Rio Grande – these trips are very popular for bird watching and can be booked by
calling (956) 784-7500.
